McLennan & McFeely was a significant business which supplied a wide variety of goods and had many stores. According to Howay and Scholefield, “The plant is an extensive one and the business now covers a wide territory, reaching out in its ramifying interests to various parts of the province". The business is today [1914] the largest of the kind west of Winnipeg and the second in size in Canada." Mc & Mc's flagship building (shown below) is still at 55 East Cordova Street in Vancouver. It was built for McLennan and McFeely and first occupied in 1908. They occupied it until 1953. In the 1960’s the building was purchased by Acklands (now Acklands-Grainger) which also purchased McLennan & McFeely.
What caught my attention was Mc &Mc's Sunset brand. I don’t know the origins but from early on the sunset illustration and name is found all over. It's very present throughout it's catalogues, signs and is even found on some products such as axes. Checkout the full 1908-1914 catalogue here. The Sunset gives a sense of moodiness and warmth, sort of odd for a wholesale hardware business. My favourite are the early illustrations.

Mc & Mc were two partners in business, perhaps also friends, hardworking like the customers. If you flip Mc Mc on-end in looks a bit like two people. Mr McKlennan and Mr. McFeely heading off to work for the day?
